But if you need to practice with your feet and your number one priority is keeping it quiet, this guy is one of the best contenders.Drum Pad Machine is a popular DJ beats music mixer. For me, though, that is not the point: I care so little about the electronics that I even took them out (trivially easy, by the way). To be perfectly clear, I have no idea how well this cheap piece of gear can compete with professional kick pads that can cost more than tenfold. They might be useful for another project I have in mind. I didn’t care about the electronics so I took it out. It’s a “playing slow is the key to playing fast” kind of deal. In general, it should be noted that even trying to play as quiet as possible, and consistently, is a great exercise: it helps develop control over the motions involved. Another solution is to practice the ankle motion. There’s not really much that can be done here, apart from building a riser/platform, possibly with tennis balls. Unfortunately the vibrations are a huge pain point for aparment drummers, and that’s especially true for anything foot related. Overall I would put it just a little above a traditional practice pad for hands, but the sound is very different – more bassy and beefy, so it’s more likely to “travel” along the walls, the floor and the ceiling. It’s no big deal but after a while it can get to you. It’s something metallic but I can’t quite figure out what (this is how I discovered my nylon washers won’t work, incidentally). Once I attached my pedals I have noticed some intermittent rattling noises.Tightening the tension rods is also a little more difficult than it should, even after greasing. This mean that tight-fit washers, like those from Hendrix Drums, don’t work. The tension rods are for some reason just a little above standard thickness.Like I said, I have noticed some (reasonably minor) build quality issues: In my opinion, its best use case scenario is exactly mine: apartment drummers that need to be quiet and have limited access to their acoustic sets. And it doesn’t fold up, so it’s not the ideal solution for life on the road. The pad is sturdy, quite heavy and bulky, compared to other practice pads. The two stabilizers in the back, together with the velcro straps, ensure that the rig doesn’t walk away. The tension rods allow for a “tuning” of sorts – as in, you can tweak the head’s response to your liking. with tension rods, a hoop and a real 8″ mesh head, which can be replaced if it breaks down. The pad is really built like a real drum, i.e. There are some build quality issues, but as far as response and noise go, I have to say this is a killer buy. It costs €69, which is even less than some of the most renowned practice pads without electronics. I sort of stumbled upon it while browsing for a solution on the internet, and the more I looked at it the more it made sense. Mesh heads: the way to go if you need to silence your drumsĮnter Millenium, ’s own cheapo drum gear brand. In that case, you have to buy a proper e-drum kick pad, which unfortunately is crazy expensive if you look at the best brands in the market: ridiculously overkill for my needs. I was baffled to discover that no one has come up with the idea to make a mesh-headed practice pad. But I distinctly remember how loud they were: simply unacceptable for me. I have tried only briefly a couple of kick pads back when I was starting out – mainly in the shops, and the main focus was testing the pedals. So the only missing piece of the puzzle was the practice pad and this is where things got quite complicated. Luckily I still have my first, right-footed Speed Cobra double pedal I purchased the lefty model after a while but I have been too lazy to put the first one up for sale. TLDR: Maybe if you want the best kick drum practice pad you should look into the world of e-drums.Īs I live in an apartment with no access to my drum kit because of the quarantine I have come to realize that I need a way to keep my feet in shape too.
